One of the national parks of Mongolia, Gorkhi-Terelj is situated at nearly 80 km north east of Ulan -Bator. The Terelj National park is recognized as a part of the huge Khan Khentii reserve and was established as a Strictly Protected Area in 1992. The park lies at 1600 meters high and it is over 1.2 million acres large. Southern portion of the park is developed for tourists, with restaurants, souvenir shops, horses and camels for rent to tourists.
Attractions include Khagiin Khar Lake, a 20m deep glacial lake 80km upstream from the tourist camps, and Yestii Hot Water Springs, natural hot springs 18km further upstream. The park also has a Buddhist monastery that is open to visitors. Inside the park, there are wide ranges of protected animals such as 250 species of birds, moose, and bears. The Tuul river flows through the park. The park has many rock formations, and includes two famous formations named for things they resemble: Turtle Rock and the Old Man Reading a Book.
There are summer camps, and winter camps, hotels which are open mostly all year long. The Terelj tourist zone has a number of tourist camps which is Mongolian traditional Ger accommodations. A few hotels, such as Tiara resort, Ulaanbaatar-2 and Terelj hotel accommodate to guests. The Terelj hotel is the most luxurious 5 star rated hotel in Mongolia. The Ulaanbaatar-2 hotel is branch of Ulaanbaatar hotel which is Mongolian first 5 star rated hotel. The Terelj and UB2 hotels are both located on the bank of Tuul river.
