The museum presents Mongolian history and culture from the dawn of human to the present day. A special gallery exhibits the clothing and accessories. Most descriptions in Mongolian and English.

The museum covers 5 areas: geology, zoology, botany, anthropology, paleontology. The paleontology exhibits include dinosaurs skeletons and eggs unearthed in Mongolia. The museum consists of:

Earth origin, planet studying meteorites
Geological history, useful resources, minerals
Ancient and contemporary botany
Land fauna /mammals, birds, fishes, insects, reptiles, amphibious/

The Winter Palace of Bogd Khaan
Built between 1893 and 1903, the museum consists of the winter home of the last Bogd Khaan, the last political and religious leader of Mongolia, and his personal temple.
