Bayan-Ulgii province is situated in the West of Mongolia, on the West and North it borders with the Russian Federation and on the South-West with the People's Republic of China. The province was established in 1940 and population of 100,000 inhabitants. The admistrative center is Ulgii, 1700 km from Capital Ulaanbaatar. The province is home to a diverse population such as Kazakhs, Tuvans, Uriankhais, Uulds and some Khalkhas and its fascinating cultures, traditional ways of life. About 90% of Bayan-Olgii's population are Kazakh, almost all of them Muslim, and rest of population are Uriankhai, Duba, Durvud and Khalkha.
The Bayan - Ulgii province is called the Roof of the World because it is famous for amazing high mountains. The Mongol Altai Mountain range is the backbone of Bayan-Olgii. Tsast Uul - 4193m high mountain, full of lush valleys with friendly Kazakh and Mongol nomads in summer, dozens of tiny unmapped lakes and soaring, permanently snowcapped peaks.
Tolbo Nuur - Frog Lake is a saltwater lake is high (2080m), expansive and eerie, but a bit disappointing because the shoreline is treeless.
